Books are the Best of all the Friends

Overview:

Francis Bacon rightly said that “some books are tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested”. In his quote, Bacon emphasized that there are very few books only to be read out as wholly because they draw our attention with diligence and develop curiosity as we go on reading them further and further. Actually, books are the food for our brains and thoughts. They provide us knowledge, and deep information and develop creativity along with critical thinking skills.

Books lead us towards a world of fantasy and imagination and pose various logical and rational questions and intend to seek our reflection. According to Charles W. Eliot, “books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers”. Books are best friends and they are always ready to talk to us and share their information and experiences with us.

Books are mirrors of the world. They give you meaning, sense, and understanding which can’t be fixed. Books offer you a diverse discourse about the happenings of the world. They make you feel sad, happy, emotional, angry, and sensitive. Books offer you ideas, visions, aims, and objectives and set your disposition.

William Styron had once expressed his thoughts about books that “a great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading”. Indeed books offer you to live and experience many lives as you feel and live within the books. Books offer you unique lenses to interpret life and live it within your own set criteria and priorities.

Introduction:

Reading is the silent but one-way communication where we find the magical and deeply impacting world of words and sentences which lead us to an imaginative world of happenings. N. Okorafor has rightly said in this regard that “I love books.

I adore everything about them. I love the feel of the pages on my fingertips. They are light enough to carry, yet so heavy with worlds and ideas. I love the sound of the pages flicking against my fingers. Print against fingerprints. Books make people quiet, yet they are so loud”.

People read books and love reading for a number of reasons. Some read it for fun, some for amusement, some for entertainment, some for passing their leisure time, some for increasing their knowledge, some for analyzing, evaluating, and criticizing, some for interpreting, some for finding meaning in it, some for motivation, some for learning and teaching, and some for gaining experience from the past events.

Similarly, there are different types, subjects, and ranges of books including novels, fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, history, politics, poetry, prose, science fiction, autobiographies, biographies, action & adventure, tragedy, romance, stories, suspense & thrill, and fairy tales.

The choices mostly vary and depend on the selection of individuals. Some books are local, some are national, some are regional, some are cultural, some are at the world level and some books are even for all times and all ages.

However, at the moment we are living in a digital and artificial intelligence-based world where life activities are changing at a very rapid pace, and certainly, no one can predict swift life changes.

Electronic and social media have significantly changed the culture of human life where we find enormous new and positive things including e-books and e-libraries. As a result of it, social media in particular offers a range of readings that is not limited to books and newspaper articles only rather blogging, and a wide range of websites have shaped new dynamics for readers and book lovers. Modern-day e-reading is gaining momentum day by day including offering a diverse range of readings for readers and interpreters.

What does Reading a Book offer us?

Reading a book is always meaningful and offers something unique but beyond our experiences and expectations. In the very words of George R. Martin, “a reader lives many thousand lives before he dies…the man who never reads lives only one.” Reading a book gives a broader view of life.

It enhances thinking and rational capabilities by knowing about the events and incidents that take place in the lives of others. Every single book is based on the life experiences of others which is why Martin has disclosed that a reader lives a thousand lives by reading different books.

Reading a book also improves our common sense approach which is not common, especially among those who rarely read any books. Books offer us a way of living and help us in setting our life objectives and priorities.

Reading brings seriousness, patience, and deep understanding among readers. Life without reading and books is dull, gloomy, and meaningless. Erasmus had once said that “When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes.”

Erasmus prioritized books even over food and clothes to wear. Walt Disney considers booking a treasurer in his quote he had told that there is more treasure in books than in the entire pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.

Therefore we can say that reading offers us access to the treasures of knowledge, wisdom, and intelligence including broadening our views of life and its experiences. Reading books makes us happy, and joyous and above all motivate us to act in life and live a life full of amusement and dazzling diligence.

Conclusion:

In the words of Elizabeth Bennet Browning, “No man can be called friendless who has God and the companionship of good books”. We can simply conclude that books are the best of friends which never cheat, deceive or be angry rather they are always ready to talk to us and make a significant impact in our lives.

However, you need to select good books which suit you as not all the books offer you the to improve your thinking and rationale skills. In this context, Descartes has rightly quoted that “the reading of all good books is like a conversation with the finest (people) of the past centuries”.

Therefore we can conclude with the words of Fran Lebowitz “think before you speak. Read before you think”. We need constant thinking before acting in our lives and for constant thinking, we need to develop the habit of constant reading whether it is in the form of books, articles, blogs, and essays we need to keep on reading and thinking throughout our life span.
