Diversity through Colours

Colours are actually virtual perceptions of the light spectrum and hence one of the properties of light. From a scientific point of view, colours are seen through our eyes and perceived through our brains. Colours are usually divided into three different forms and types known primary, secondary & tertiary colours. 

From an artistic point of view, colours have a very diverse and impactful world that not only reflects our mood, psyche, feeling, matching, and contrasting but specific messaging and communication as well. Colours give us an indication of different seasons, events, relationships, fashion and cultural celebrations. 

To some extent, the very specific choice of colours reflects your gender or sex. We often hear about the girls like pink colour dresses and boys like blue colour dresses. So whatever choice of colours you have, it is unique and specific as we can’t fix the sense and meaning of colours in the world of art.

Colours Symbolism & Common Understanding:

Most of the colours are used for specific indications and symbolism. They have some common understanding and indication. Let’s have a look at the symbolism and common understanding of the 10 colours that we have as common.

1.     Red Colour: 
     We all know that our blood has red colour hence this colour is associated with passion, anger, energy and love. In Chinese culture, red colour is a symbol of good luck but in South Africa, it is a symbol of mourning over the loss of something which is quite special to you. 
   
    Similarly in most South Asian countries, red colour is a symbol of fragrance, happiness and excitement and brides usually wear the red colour dress on the very special occasion of their marriage.  Red is a very strong colour and it has a very diverse combination capability with so many different colours.

2.     White Colour: 

   This colour is considered the mother of all colours because light has only one colour which is white colour. When light passes from any transparent object like a prism it forms a spectrum of different colours. White colour is symbolized by peace, harmony, simplicity, minimalism, mysticism, purity, virginity, aestheticism and autism. 

   White colour is extensively used in different cultures of the world for a number of specific norms, customs and traditions. UNO also uses this colour as a symbol of peace, harmony and prosperity in the world.

3.     Black Colour: 

   Imagine a dark and long cold night in the winter season. Don’t you feel something melodious and mysterious? I don’t think so. Black colour is a colour of elegance which is associated with elegance, exclusiveness, sophistication, versatility, style, brand and party celebrations. People often wear black at night functions and parties. 

  Similarly, black is also worn out during tragedies and mourning over the separation or death of loved ones. In certain cultures and religious norms black colour is considered the sacred, dominant and powerful colour of all colours.

4. Pink Colour: 

 Pink is often considered a colour of femininity. Little girls love so much the dolls of pink colour which is why this colour is usually associated with something that is tendering, bright, playful, sweet, charming, romantic, cute and sensitive. In modern-day pink is also associated with “International Breast Cancer Day Awareness for Women.” Similarly in animated movies and cartoons especially for girls usually we see characters of princesses and angels wearing purple colour dresses.

5.   Blue Colour:  

    If you look at a blue sky you feel something very calm and cool. Similarly, when see the blue ocean gives you an insight into something very deep and powerful. The blue colour actually represents calmness, depth, power, intelligence, association, dependability, sympathy, responsibility, preference and peace. Blue is basically considered a colour for boys and males.

6.  Green Colour: 

   One thing that immediately comes into our mind after hearing the word green is nature. This colour is associated with harmony, growth, soothing, calmness, nature, stability, wealth and good health. Green reflects your natural, eco-friendly, organic, healthy and stable choice. The green colour is an ideal colour for your eyesight.

7.   Purple Colour: 

  Well, you may have heard about “purple dye”. It was very much expensive and only royal rulers could afford to wear it in old times. Purple colour is mainly associated with luxury, spirituality, warmth & coldness, mystery, classicism and royalty. This colour is also known as violet, indigo and magenta.

8. Brown Colour: 

  Have you ever observed the earth and its soil? What do you observe and think about it? Which things come to your mind? Yes of course the brown colour but there are so many other things as well which come into my mind. Earth gives us support, stability, the growth of plants and lot many other things. 

   The brown colour is therefore symbolized honesty, support, sacrifice, warmth, wholesomeness, loyalty, friendship and dependability. People who like brown colour are actually practical in approach, dependable, friendly and loyal to you.       

9. Orange Colour: 

  This colour is mainly associated with energy, enthusiasm, youthfulness, creativity, adventure, vitality, excitement, attraction, fascination, wealth, desire, passion and playfulness. Orange fruit also contains vitamin C (energy). This colour has some other forms as dark, red and gold orange.

10. Yellow:  

  Yellow colour reflects brightness, hope, spontaneity, happiness, attention, caution, light-hearted and progress. Along with the sun, many flowers possess yellow colours which immediately attract and diverge your attention. This colour is sometimes attributed to show jealousy and cowardice as well.

Conclusion:

From the above-mentioned discussion, we can say that colours have a definite meaning, sense and creativity. However, it is entirely up to us how we perceive them and use them to reflect our emotions, feelings, sentiments and understandings. 

Colours offer you hope, optimism, a way forward, soothing and calmness. Colours also offer you glamour, fashion, make-up, and art and add beauty to your outlook and approach. 

Therefore we can say colours do have an enormous, unending and diverse world. What we require is an artistic approach to seeing, reading and meaning them. Last but not the least, colours are life and life is colours.
